Strongest earthquake in a dozen years rattles Montana
July 6, 2017 at 3:20 am cdt - A 5.8 magnitude earthquake shook parts of Montana just after midnight Thursday. It was centered about 5 miles southeast of Lincoln at a depth of about 2.6 miles.

. It was felt from Cut Bank to Billings and Gardiner, and as far away as Seattle, Washington, and Alberta, Canada. Things were shaken off of shelves. A power outage was reported in Lincoln. The earthquake appears to be the largest to hit Montana since July 2005.

The first shake occurred at 12:30 a.m. and lasted about 30 seconds, beginning with a slow tremor and then building in intensity. It was followed by many aftershocks, ranging from 3.8 to 4.9 in magnitude

We had one heck of a shaker roll thru Lincoln. Centered just outside of town at magnitude 5.8. Please make sure your propane tanks are not compromised or off their blocks. Check your chimneys and furnace exhausts to make sure they are still aligned and not at risk. Be prepared for aftershocks (many occurring)
Always have a 3 day supply of food and water, for you and your pets. Check your livestock and fences too.
Do an examination of your home once its daylight, check your pipes, water heaters, etc.

My note
A friend in Montana Emailed me this morning -
it threw me out of bed. That was a surprise, for this area. Lincoln has had quakes but I never felt them before, it was a rockin and rollin.

She told me 2 days ago that animals were restless in her area. Animals sense quakes early - I wonder how.

July 6, 2017 A magnitude-5.8 earthquake hit western Montana and people felt the tremor hundreds of miles away. The earthquake struck five miles (9 km) southeast of Lincoln, Montana. Several aftershocks with magnitudes of more than 4 were reported by the USGS. The Pacific Tsunami Warning center earlier reported the quake with a magnitude of 6.0.
