Israel MUST retain sovereignty there. Druze occupy much of it on both sides.
There is an annual UN resolution calling for Israel to return the Golan Heights to Syria. In the 1973 Yom Kippur war Syria attacked Israel from there. Israel came close to losing that war. Current Syria President Bashar Assad took office July 2000
