July 1, 2020 - In a scathing rebuke of a ruling supported by Chief Justice John Roberts against abortion restrictions, Associate Justice Clarence Thomas wrote that the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling has no constitutional basis and must be overruled. Thomas issued the dissent in the Supreme Court's 5-4 decision in June to strike down a Louisiana law. The law requires that individuals who perform abortions at clinics have admitting privileges in a nearby hospital. The majority found the law unconstitutional, concluding it places an undue burden on women seeking abortions. July 5, 2020 - SCOTUS blocks Alabama order easing voting restrictions. Alabama wisely requires VoterID - all states must! The U.S. Supreme Court blocked a lower-court ruling that would have relaxed voting restrictions in Alabama. Voters must submit a photo identification when they apply for an absentee ballot, and it requires that ballot to be returned along with the signature of 2 witnesses or a notary. A U.S. district court judge in Birmingham issued a ruling in June that would have freed voters from the photo I.D. requirement. July 6, 2020 - The 538 people who cast the actual votes for president in December as part of the Electoral College are not free agents and must vote as the laws of their states direct, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled. The November general election is not actually a direct vote for the presidential candidates. Voters instead choose a slate of electors appointed in their states by the political parties. Those electors meet in December to cast their ballots, which are counted during a joint session of Congress in January. This is a BAD ruling.
