Ethiopia disputed dam
Nov 5, 2019 - President Donald Trump spoke with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and voiced support for negotiations between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan over a giant hydroelectric dam on Ethiopia’s Blue Nile. Egypt fears the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) could restrict already scarce supplies of water from the Nile. Egypt is dependent on this water. Ethiopia says the dam is crucial to its economic development. Mar 4, 2020 - President Donald Trump told Egypt President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi we will keep up efforts for a deal among Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan over GERD dam Ethiopia is building on the Nile. The 3 countries had expected to sign a GERD accord in Washington last week but Ethiopia skipped the meeting. Ethiopia has ambition to become Africa’s biggest power exporter. But that has sparked fears in Cairo that Egypt’s already scarce supplies of Nile river water would be further restricted. 100 million people are dependent on the Nile. Egypt is a largely desert country and short of water. Ethiopia denies the dam will undermine Egypt’s access to water. The dam is under construction near Ethiopia’s border with Sudan on the Blue Nile, which flows into the Nile river. He took off for Sudan Africa on the first official direct Tel Aviv-Khartoum flight Tuesday, a day after meeting with Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem.
