Aug 11 2018 - Turkey currency in free fall after President Donald Trump doubled tariffs on metals imports. President Erdogan told Turks to exchange gold and dollars into lira. The lira dropped 40% this year. That drives up the cost of imported goods for ordinary Turks. Investors are selling off shares in European banks with large exposure to the Turkish economy. Will over-indebted companies will be able to pay back loans taken out in euros and dollars after years of Erdogan overseas borrowing. Erdogan's insanity further unnerved investors. Erdogan policy is worsening relations with the United States. Turkey and the United States disagreement over the detention of US citizens in Turkey, notably Christian pastor Andrew Brunson.
