Dems double standards
Nov 27, 2017 - I compiled a listing of points off Twitter.
twitter.com/SouthBeachPol1,2 Watching Pelosi call Conyers an icon of American society as a defense to sexual harassment settlements showed that in democrats mind, even credible accusations backed up by cash payouts is not a firing offense. If it were, she would have demanded he step down.
3/ Instead, Pelosi called for "due process", though "process" is exactly what lead to the payouts in the first place.
He had process - and he paid out. (Out of TAXpayer money!)
4/ The Democrats have officially fallen back to the Clinton playbook:
A) Attack the Victim
B) Dismiss the Allegation
C) Stall for more time
D) Let the Voters Decide
5/ Leaving these matters to law enforcement prosecutions, due process and the ballot box is a perfectly reasonable thing to want.
6/ The problem is that they have created the appearance of a double standard. An accusation is "disqualifying" for a political opponent but democrats.
7/ "Good for thee but not for me" is bad politics. Mitch McConnell and his group of favorites may soon be on the receiving end of this one, too.
8, 9 - it is fascinating McConnell made such a YUGE mistake. It is no surprise the Senate is loaded with sickos like Menendez and Franken. (and Mitch)
Accusations alone shouldnt be disqualifying
10/ There is something dispiriting about letting "the voters" decide in an environment that is highly partisan. Districts are so gerrymandered to partisans it is hard (impossible?) to ask voters to swallow an opposition candidate w/ a basket of principles they oppose.
11,12 - Sadly, this is more a reflection on the Rule of Law than on our politics. If we had an efficient system for rooting out corruption and abuse of authority, trivial accusations could be sorted out in due course.
13,14 - Unfortunately, Pelosi gets to the heart of the problem: there is a perception that politicians are above the law. So a plea for due process sounds a lot like a call for no justice at all. And that is a seismic problem - creating an enormous awakening in our politics.
15, 16 - #DraintheSwamp isnt just about cutting spending, its about restoring fundamental fairness and virtue to politics. Trump is an imperfect vessel, but there will be other populists who follow and pick up the football to run with it.
17/ Everyone can see that our politics and our politicians are corrupt to the bone. Menendez actually got sitting Senators to come testify that there's nothing wrong with taking fancy hooker vacations to foreign countries with "friends".
18/ And that doing favors for your "friends" is perfectly normal and has *NOTHING* to do with the fancy hooker vacation.
19/ Fortunately, I think Americans have had enough. The "Whataboutism" isn't swaying anyone any more. More and more, the voters just want to get rid of the bad apples.
20, 21 - That means new politicians are coming and new rules. Hopefully new rules about hanging out with foreigners. New rules about hanging out with lobbyists.
22/ At the end of the day, if you lay down with dogs you get fleas. And for far too long we've let our politicians undermine the rule of law, laying down with dogs. /END
