$15 minimum wage experiment Bay Area cities across California who adopted the $15 minimum wage stance are steadily experiencing restaurant die-off as 60 restaurants in the Bay Area has closed since September alone.
From Fresnobee: In a pair of affluent coastal California counties, the canary in the mineshaft has gotten splayed, spatchcocked and plated over a bed of unintended consequences, garnished with sprigs of locally sourced economic distortion and non-GMO, “What the heck were they thinking?”
The result of one early experiment in a citywide $15 minimum wage is an ominous sign for the state’s poorer inland counties as the statewide wage floor creeps toward the mark. Consider San Francisco, an early adopter of the $15 wage. It’s now experiencing a restaurant die-off, minting jobless hash-slingers, cashiers, busboys, scullery engineers and line cooks as they get pink-slipped in increasing numbers. And the wage there hasn’t yet hit $15.
As the East Bay Times reported in January, at least 60 restaurants around the Bay Area had closed since September alone. A recent study by Michael Luca at Harvard Business School and Dara Lee Luca at Mathematica Policy Research found that every $1 hike in the minimum wage brings a 14 percent increase in the likelihood of a 3.5-star restaurant on Yelp! closing.
Another telltale is San Diego, where voters approved increasing the city’s minimum wage to $11.50 per hour from $10.50, this after the minimum wage was increased from $8 an hour in 2015 – meaning hourly costs have risen 43 percent in two years.
The cost increases have pushed San Diego restaurants to the brink, Stephen Zolezzi, president of the Food and Beverage Association of San Diego County, told the San Diego Business Journal. Watch for the next mass die-off there.
But what of California’s less affluent inland counties? How will they fare?
Christopher Thornberg, director of UC Riverside’s Center for Economic Forecasting and Development, told the San Bernardino Sun that politicians should have adopted a regional approach. He said it would been better to adapt minimum-wage levels to varying economies – something like the Oregon model, the nation’s first multi-tiered minimum-wage strategy.
Oregon’s minimum-wage law is phased, with increases over six years. By 2022, the minimum will be $14.75 an hour in Portland, $13.50 in midsize counties and $12.50 in rural areas.
Jerry Brown just hit Californians with a $58 billion tax bomb!
From Sacbee.com: Now that Gov. Jerry Brown has signed into law billions of dollars in higher fuel taxes and vehicle fees, the state will have an estimated $52 billion more money to help cover the state’s transportation needs for the next decade.
The money comes largely from a 12-cent increase in the base gasoline excise tax and a new transportation improvement fee based on vehicle value. Other money will come from paying off past transportation loans, Caltrans savings, and new charges on diesel fuel and zero-emission vehicles.
The bulk of the revenue raised will go to various state and local road programs, as well as public transit, goods movement and traffic congestion.
The measure, Senate Bill 1, sets ambitious goals. By the end of 2027, it says least 98 percent of state highway pavement should be in good or fair condition, at least 90 percent of culverts should be in good or fair condition and at least 500 bridges must be fixed.
In June 2018, meanwhile, California voters will get to weigh in on another part of the package: a constitutional amendment supporters say will keep lawmakers from diverting the money to other purposes.
San Francisco To Becoming First Sanctuary City For Criminals 7/12/17 The Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) is refusing to release surveillance videos of 3 recent incidences involving a mob of teenagers robbing passengers on their trains. BART's reason for not releasing the videos? Fear of spreading racial bias. A member of the BART Board of Directors, Debora Allen, hits the nail on the head when she asks, "What is the priority of BART? Is the safety of the passenger—of all passengers—is that a lesser priority than the race bias issue?"

Kamala Harris 18 Jun 2017 - She’s Not Mean. She’s Just Being Kamala. Former San Francisco mayor Willie Brown has offered an odd defense of Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), whose habit of interrupting Cabinet members during Senate hearings — and being rebuked by the chair — has made her a heroine on the left.
Harris interrupted Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly. Supporters of Sen. Kamala Harris have been calling me to ask if she’s coming across as too strident in her questioning of Justice Department officials testifying before the Intelligence Committee.
“You know, she seems kind of mean,” one caller said. “She’s not mean,” I said. “She’s just being Kamala.”
Unlike many politicians, Harris did not work her way up the ladder in the glad-handing world of city councils and the Legislature. She came into the Senate via the courthouse, first as a front-line prosecutor and then district attorney in San Francisco, followed by six years as state attorney general.
She is a dead-on prosecutor, and when she goes into that mode, watch out. She is out for blood. Brown goes on to say: “Harris doesn’t care about Senate courtesy. She has no interest in being in their club. Or any club.” He adds that she once joked that she would make jaywalking a “capital offense.” www.breitbart.com/california/2017/06/18/shes-not-mean-shes-just-kamala

7/24/17 Since the passage of prop 47, violent crimes is up 40%.
LOS ANGELES, CA (FOX 11) - Crime is up, and arrests are down. It is not surprising that arrests are down 30% since 2014 when Prop 47 went into effect. The problem with Prop 47 is simply many felonies were downgraded to misdemeanors. Under Prop 47 for example, property theft in many cases went from a felony to a misdemeanor. Stealing a gun became no more than a misdemeanor ticket.
Without any real consequences, criminals were given a green light to steal more weapons and therefore commit more crimes. With so many crimes downgraded from felonies to misdemeanors, police officers in many instances felt it was not worth it to make arrests for these offenses. This has become especially true at a time when police conduct has come under increased scrutiny at every turn. Officers don’t want to be the next media case over a misdemeanor. Therefore it also comes as no surprise that violent crime in Los Angeles is up an astounding 40% since the passage of Prop 47 in November of 2014. Fewer arrests and incarcerations have translated into more crime.
