Protests in the city began in June calling for an end to communism. Hong Kong forbids extradition to China for anyone accused of violating Communist Party laws in Hong Kong. Under current Hong Kong law, Beijing cannot enforce communist laws there.

The protesters claim the Chinese government is encroaching on their freedoms established under the ‘one country, two systems’ formula at the end of British colonial rule in 1984 and call on the sovereign to do something about it.
Britain had control over Hong Kong for decades after taking it from imperial China. South China Sea dispute July 14, 2020 - The world will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. China's pursuit of offshore resources in parts of the South China Sea is completely unlawful said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Beijing's campaign of bullying to control the disputed waters was wrong.
China has been building military bases on artificial islands in a region also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. The countries have wrangled over territory in the South China Sea for centuries.
Island chains in the area may have reserves of natural resources, the sea is a shipping route and has major fishing grounds. China's claims on the disputed #Spratly Islands have no legal grounds.
