Freedom of Forgiveness
Sunday meditation
Pastor CJ
Is forgiving a feeling, emotion?
Does forgiving mean restoring a relationship?
Does forgiving mean forgetting?
Is once enough? Not usually.
Philippians 3 I focus on this one thing:
Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead,
I press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus, is calling us.
As the Lord Jesus Christ hung on the cross, He stretched out His arms and FORGAVE those who crucified Him! What an example!
Is forgiving a feeling, emotion?
NO, forgiving is a CHOICE.
When we make the CHOICE to forgive, we choose to free ourself from that prison.
We choose LIFE. We begin to heal and be renewed.
We are instructed in Jesus sample prayer to forgive.
Its called 'The Lord's Prayer' but the real prayer of our Lord is found in John 17.
The original indicates to deliver us from 'the Evil one' - Satan, the devil, Lucifer.
Sometimes we need to forgive ourself!
I have even counseled people who needed to forgive God - and it helped them, freed them! Not that God needs forgiving of course, but an individual may need the freedom they get from doing that.
Forgiving is not an emotion. We feel like we feel, that is not right or wrong, it just is. Forgiving is a choice, and very often must be repeated several times a day, week, month - until the feeling of peace, release comes.
It may be helpful to picture handing 'it' to Jesus, turning and walking away.
Unforgiveness holds YOU in a prison. The other person may not even know you resent them.
Matthew 6:14
For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.
But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.
Luke 11:4
Forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us.
And lead us not into temptation.
