China vs Hong Kong
Aug 9, 2019 - China’s Communist Party office running Hong Kong organized a symposium where a top government official called the protests there a battle of life and death for the future of communism there. Protests in the city began in June calling for an end to communism. Hong Kong forbids extradition to China for anyone accused of violating Communist Party laws in Hong Kong. Under current Hong Kong law, Beijing cannot enforce communist laws there. Chinese police in Shenzhen province north of Hong Kong staged a 12,000-officer anti-riot drill. Aug 11, 2019 - Typhoon Lekima leaves 28 dead and a million evacuated in China. Lekima triggered a landslide and left a trail of destruction in its wake. South China Sea dispute
July 14, 2020 - The world will not allow Beijing to treat the South China Sea as its maritime empire. China's pursuit of offshore resources in parts of the South China Sea is completely unlawful said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Beijing's campaign of bullying to control the disputed waters was wrong. China has been building military bases on artificial islands in a region also claimed by Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines, Taiwan and Vietnam. The countries have wrangled over territory in the South China Sea for centuries. Island chains in the area may have reserves of natural resources, the sea is a shipping route and has major fishing grounds. China's claims on the disputed #Spratly Islands have no legal grounds.
