July 8, 2017 - Israel wants a 30-mile buffer zone to protect against Hezbollah and Iran, but doesn't want the zone controlled by Russia. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu phoned Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss creating an extended buffer zone in Syria. The new buffer zone would extend to 30 miles (48 kilometers) east of the Golan Heights, and include the Syrian towns of Daraa and As-Suwaida. Neither Iran nor Hezbollah would be allowed into the buffer zone. However, it would not be controlled by Russia. Israel is concerned Syria will end up being divided, with some areas held by Russia and Iran and others held by rebels, competing powers, and Kurds. July 8, 2017 - Iran consented to a ceasefire going into effect Sunday, July 9. (We'll see... ) The United States, Russia and regional countries reached a ceasefire deal in southwestern Syria. Tehran was persuaded to come on board this limited ceasefire in urgent phone conversations. Iran giving up military operations along Syria borders with Israel and Jordan is part of a US-Russian tradeoff for Iranian gains on other Syrian fronts. For Iran, the big gain would be its military control along the Syrian-Iraqi border, as its land corridor from Iraq into Syria. NOT good. Assad shelled 2 villages north of Daraa, one of 3 provinces affected by the ceasefire. The USA-Russia-Jordan deal is to be enforced by noon Sunday (dawn in USA), in the provinces of Daraa, Sweida and Quneitra (Golan) in the southwest, along the Jordanian border. (Daraa and Suwayda (Sweida or Swaida) are mainly Druze in SW Syria near Jordan.) The agreement was the result of a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump at G20 in Hamburg. Russian military police in the area would monitor the ceasefire. The deal is separate from an agreement that Russia, Turkey and Iran struck earlier this year to try to establish de-escalation zones in Syria. July 9, 2017 - The ceasefire to which Presidents Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin agreed should go into effect Sonday, on Syria’s borders with Jordan and Israel. Iran and Hellzballah are on Israeli borders. Unknown if they intend to uphold the truce. Putin and Trump assured Netanyahu that Israel’s concerns would be taken into account Only Jordan is celebrating the ceasefire and claiming it as a major feat. According to spokesmen in Amman, American and Jordanian drones and warplanes will jointly monitor the cessation of hostilities and the rebel-held areas of Daraa and Quneitra will become autonomous rebel-ruled regions, as a model for the rest of the country. (This has a lot of interpretations) Such reports are without foundation. The Americans and Russians have not yet filled in the details of the new arrangement, such as who will supervise the truce, which troops will police it - or even the demarcation line boundary around the demilitarized enclave. (Giving SSyria to Jordan would be a good idea.) Trump proposed posting US (yes) or international forces (no) in the Deraa and Quneitra areas. No one knows where Tehran or Damascus stand. In Syria, there is never any shortage of willing ceasefire-breakers. The presence of Iran and Hizballah on Israel’s border is unacceptable. Turkey is angry the USA armed the YPF Kurds. PYD Kurds in Idlib trying to dislodge Turkey, who dont belong there. USA backed YPG Kurds control Afrin, west of Raqqa. The Iraqi border area is controlled by the PYD/YPG. The Kurds want their nation-state, Kurdistan. July 18, 2017 - Russia will move into Quneitra, Golan Syria opposite the Israeli Golan border to police Zone 2. Israel told Washington and Moscow they are opposed to this. Zone 1 in Daraa on the Jordanian border will quickly break down if it is not shored up in Zone 2 Quneitra. US, Russia and Jordan allow Hellzballah in Zone 1 Daraa. They knew Jerusalem would object. Zone 2 Quneitra will allow Iran-Hellzballa, heedless of urgent Israeli demands. No wonder Bibi is pissed. My guess is the Trump-Putin deal takes Golan away from Israel at some point.
