The murdered civilians were fleeing Mosul as the Iraqi army attempted to retake the city from ISIS. April 9, 2017 - The new tactics will mean fewer U.S. and Iraqi air strikes. Looks like they will extend the timeframe for the Mosul Operation. The new approach seems to be to walk the cordon in closer around the City and Old Town, for a bit more of a siege, rather than sweeping on line from the South. Coalition doesn't want any more embarrassing mass casualties of civilians from air strikes (ISIS sets them up), and the Iraqis were taking lots of casualties. Victory but cleanup continues in Mosul
July 12, 2017 - Iraqi forces clashed with ISIS holdouts in Mosul, 36 hours after PM Abadi declared victory. Pockets of Mosul remain insecure. About 900,000 people had fled. Activity returned to much of Mosul and work to repair damage is underway. There is still an atmosphere of war. Oct 5, 2017 ERBIL, Kurdistan - Hawija taken from ISIS, Iraq claimed credit. Hawija is southeast of Kirkuk, and was a centre of ISIS territory. From there ISIS carried out attacks on Peshmerga Kurds and civilians in Kirkuk province. Oct 10, 2017 - I knew the Iraq army cant do nufin. Iraqi prime minister Haydar al-Abadi’s claim disputed that his army vanquished ISIS to liberate Hawija near Kirkuk. Iraqi army negotiated a deal with ISIS through the mediation of local Arab tribes. They granted safe passage for the occupiers and their families to withdraw from Hawija, in return for a commitment not to resist the Iraqi army’s takeover of the town.
